           1.         Introduction. Open-loop vs. closed-loop control.

           2.         External vs. internal stability.

Week 2 (September 9)

           3.         Performance specs. Steady-state specs.

           4.         Internal model principle. PS1 Due.

Week 3 (September 16)

           5.         Pole placement using polynomial methods. Sylvester's theorem.

           6.         Incorporating integral feedback into the pole placement algorithm.

Week 4 (September 23)

           7.         Pole placement using state feedback. Controllable canonical form. Look at the controllability handout.

8.         Ackermann's formula.

Week 5 (September 30)

9.         Tracking in state-space systems. Precompensators. Integral.

10.       Observers.  Reduced order observers.

Week 6 (October 7)

11.       LQR.

12.       Simulink tutorial.

Week 7 (October 14; remember that Tuesday is really a Monday this week!)

13.       LQR.

14.       Optimal observer.

Week 8 (October 21)

15.       Frequency domain design.

16.       Frequency domain design.

Week 9 (October 28)

17.       Discrete-time modeling.

18.       Discrete-time control.

Week 10 (November 4)

      19-20. Project Week 1.
