Week 2:  Specific heat, thermal conductivity and thermoelectric effects.  Successes and shortcomings of the classical theory.

Week 3 Classical theory of optical and dielectric properties. Maxwell Equations. Book: Chapter 1. Notes: Chapters 1 and 2 .

Week 4: Wave equations. Electromagnetic waves. Energy and power of electro-magnetic waves.  Classical theory of polarizability. Book: Chapter 1. Notes: Chapters 2 and 3..

Homework 2  is out.

 

Week 5 Electromagnetic waves in metals. Classical theory of radiation. Photo-electric effect. Successes and shortcomings of the classical theory of optical properties.  Notes: Chapters 3 and 4.
