Admissions Requirements
The primary requirement for admission into the graduate program is excellence in an undergraduate program. Letters of recommendation and the results of the Graduate Record Examination are also required for admissions decisions. An offer of admission into the Department implies that the student is considered to have the potential to attain the degree sought at Johns Hopkins.
The class of graduate students admitted each year is a carefully selected group of individuals who will benefit from a close and frequent interaction with faculty in pursuing their research. We strongly encourage prospective graduate students to visit the campus and speak with faculty in their intended research area while their application for admission to the graduate program is pending.
Application Procedure
Applicants must use the Graduate Programs On-Line Application.
Paper applications will not be accepted. There is a $25 application fee.
The submission deadline for the Fall, 2008 semester is January 17, 2008. Please note that we do not offer spring admission. Financial aid up to and including full tuition and T/A salary are offered to Ph.D. candidates based on the candidate's academic achievements, potential to excel in graduate study and financial need. The Department accepts candidates with a bachelor's degree directly into the Ph.D. degree program.
An application is considered complete when a student submits the following: an online application, official transcripts from all universities attended, official copies of GRE and TOEFL scores, a statement of purpose (with a signed application verification sheet) and two letters of recommendation. The Admissions Committee strongly advises that all application materials be submitted together whenever possible. This expedites the lengthy process. The Admissions Committee renders admission decisions in early spring; applicants are then notified of their current status. Please send all application materials to ASEN Graduate Admissions. We no longer accept certified mail, we only accept UPS, Fedex, DHL deliveries.

Financial Aid
It is the policy of the department to support as many graduate students as possible through a combination of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, tuition fellowships, and partial tuition fellowships. First- and second-year doctoral students normally receive appointments as teaching assistants and receive a full tuition fellowship and stipend. Students beyond their second year of graduate study are usually supported as research assistants. However, if that is not possible, the department, to the extent that it can, will continue to support the student as a teaching assistant. It has been our experience that this is necessary only in rare circumstances. It is not the policy of the department to offer full financial aid to graduate students who are enrolled only for the purpose of obtaining a master's degree. However, limited financial aid of 50% tuition support is available for some of these students.
